From Summit to Valley - Highland Diaries of the Kaçkar Mountains

Journey through the Kaçkar Mountains from high alpine plateaus to lush forest valleys. Camp under the stars, explore hidden lakes and mountain trails, and experience the quiet rhythm of nature and traditional highland life in the eastern Black Sea region.

The Experience

Overview
This journey follows a mountain route from high plateaus to forest valleys in the eastern Black Sea region.
Rather than a classic trekking tour, the experience focuses on the rhythm of walking, time spent in nature and the quiet simplicity of mountain life. Along the way, travellers camp in the highlands, explore alpine lakes and descend through valleys shaped by rivers, forests and traditional villages.
The journey invites participants to slow down, reconnect with nature and experience the landscapes of the Kaçkar Mountains at a human pace.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival & Highland Camp
Guests meet at Rize–Artvin Airport and travel towards the mountains.
After a short stop in Fındıklı, we continue by vehicle to Çamlık Plateau, where our highland camp is set up.
Following the camp installation, guests take a short exploration walk in the surrounding landscape, with possible routes towards Sazın Düzü or the nearby highland viewpoints.
In the evening we gather for dinner at the campsite. For those who wish, an optional night walk offers the chance to experience the silence of the mountains and the night sky above the plateau.

Overnight in highland camp.

Day 2 – Marsis Summit & Alpine Lakes
After breakfast we begin our ascent towards the Marsis Summit.
The route climbs from around 2,200 metres to over 3,000 metres, passing two remarkable alpine lakes known as Green Lake and Blue Lake.
At the summit we pause to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains before having lunch in nature.
On the return journey we pass through several highland areas, including Sırt Plateau, Karagöl viewpoint and Yurt Plateau, before returning to the campsite.

Dinner and overnight at the highland camp.

Day 3 – Waterfall Valley & Village Landscape
In the morning we pack our camp and begin our descent from the highlands.
Those who wish can walk down towards Salma Waterfall, following a scenic trail through forest landscapes. Lunch is prepared near the waterfall, accompanied by the sound of flowing water.
After the walk we travel to Çağlayan Village, where we visit a historic stone bridge and enjoy a short coffee break.
Later we continue to the hotel for a relaxing evening.

Dinner and overnight in the Çağlayan Valley.

Day 4 – Village Paths & Tea Culture
After breakfast we take a short walk through village paths, discovering traditional Laz houses and the architectural character of the region.
The journey concludes with a visit to the Tchala Tea workshop, where guests discover the story and culture of tea in the region.
Following some free time in Fındıklı, we transfer to Rize–Artvin Airport for departure.
